VITOR AGUIAR E SILVA LIBRARY

The School of Arts, Letters and Humanities (ELACH) has a specialised library covering the most diverse areas of the Humanities. Besides a valuable collection of rare books and complete works of important writers and theorists, it has thousands of volumes of critical literature (books and scientific journals), to support research in Literary and Cultural Studies, Linguistics and Philosophy.

Dating back to the foundation of the Centre for Portuguese Studies (CEP) in 1980 and its subsequent expansion to the Centre for Humanistic Studies (CEHUM) in 1994, the ELACH library has been adapted to the evolution of research in the Humanities. Since in the last decades it has been diversifying and therefore differentiating into multiple subdomains, such as Gender Studies, Post-Colonial Studies, Performative Studies and Interarts, among others. Given that, additionally, a second research centre was created in 2016 based at ILCH, the Centre for Ethics, Politics and Society (CEPS), the library has recently undergone a profound restructuring and expansion. Since late 2018, the library is set in several in fully equipped rooms that serve the students and teachers of the various undergraduate and postgraduate courses of ILCH and other schools of UMinho, as well as the researchers of its two research centres and of other institutions and internal or external research centres.

As a tribute to the founder of CEP and CEHUM, ELACH’s library was renamed in December 2018 after the prestigious scholar of Portuguese Literature and famous theorist of Literature, former Vice-Rector of the University of Minho and President of ELACH: Vítor Aguiar e Silva.
