Description


Study program’s generic objectives. 
- To promote advanced knowledge (theoretical or applied) in the Sciences of Language; 
- To foster the development of research skills; 
- To promote the realization of autonomous and original work in the domain of the Sciences of Language; 
- To promote the realization of innovative work in the domain of the Sciences of Language; 
- To contribute to expanding the frontiers of knowledge related to Language Sciences. 
- To extend the scope of current knowledge in the Sciences of Language to other fields within or outside the humanities; 
- To train individuals capable of engaging in professional activities in applied domains of the
Sciences of Language:
• language education;
• translation;
• editing;
• speech therapy;
• forensic linguistics;
• industries of speech;
• design of language policies in multilingual contexts.

Key learning outcomes


Holders of the degree of Doctor are expected to
1. show the ability to use the terminology and the methods required for an adequate description of linguistic phenomena;
2. demonstrate knowledge of the relevant literature in specific fields of the Sciences of Language;
3. show the ability to project significant research respecting academic standards;
4. show the ability to carry out significant research respecting academic standards;
5. have written a set of original papers some of which are worthy of publication in national or
international reference journals;
6. show the ability to communicate the results of their research in a clear language and without
ambiguities;
7. demonstrate the capacity to promote technological, social and cultural progress in an academic or professional context.

Access to higher education


The conclusion of this Doctoral degree allows the realization of research activity at post-doctoral level.

Careers


It is intended that the skills acquired during the PhD in Language Sciences can anchor, strengthen and provide the professional activity of cultural, business and institutional agents in the field of linguistic communication. The sectors of activity with potential employability of PhD graduates in Language Sciences are, among others, communication, linguistic consultancy, translation, teaching, advertising, editorial supervision and work in software companies interested in natural language processing (speech industries).

Formal requirements


Applicants may be:
a) Holders of a Master’s degree in Language Sciences or Linguistics.
b) Holders of other Master’s degrees, provided that they have the equivalent of 30 ECTS in a scientific area of Language Sciences in their curriculum.
c) Holders of a foreign, duly recognized, higher degree in Language Sciences or Linguistics, or those who hold in their curriculum the equivalent of 30 ECTS in a scientific area of Language Sciences.
d) Holders of an academic, scientific or professional curriculum that is recognized by the Scientific Council of the School of Arts and Humanities as attesting their ability to carry out this cycle of studies.
