Description


The PhD in the field of knowledge in Philosophy is a course without a curricular part (without formal classes), with a duration of three years (180 ECTS), which allows the acquisition of solid knowledge through a rigorous methodological process typical of the Human Sciences. During the investigations, the doctoral student is accompanied, in a personalized way, by one or more supervisors. At the end of the triennium, the PhD candidate must have prepared a thesis that, after being successfully defended publicly, will grant him the degree of Doctor of Philosophy.
The Doctorate in Philosophy has a body of professors and researchers composed of specialists with established recognition in the national university system and a strong internationalization. There is also the possibility of resorting to co-supervision by professors/researchers, of recognized merit, outside the University of Minho.

Key learning outcomes


Graduates of the Doctorate in Philosophy must have achieved the following learning objectives:
1. Possess advanced knowledge in Philosophy (in the area of ??expertise);
2. Rigorously master research methodologies;
3. Have the ability to carry out autonomous and original work in the field of Philosophy;
4. Have the competence to develop innovative research projects in the field of Philosophy;
5. To be able to contribute to the expansion of the frontiers of knowledge related to Philosophy and its intersection with other domains of knowledge, inside and outside the Humanities;
6. Have acquired communication skills to effectively expose, orally and in writing, concepts, theories and arguments in the field of Philosophy and with other knowledge;
7. Develop skills for teaching Philosophy at a higher level;
8. Acquire training to intervene in professional activities and in the public space.

Access to higher education


Completion of this doctoral course allows carrying out a post-doctoral research activity.

Completion of the Doctorate in Philosophy allows:
- Insertion in the academic career of Higher Education;
- Conducting post-doctoral research activities;
- The integration of national and international companies where, for their performance, the argumentation factor is crucial;
- Inclusion in national and international institutions/companies where, for their performance and for their innovative evolution, the "critical spirit" is relevant;
- The integration of ethics committees of public and private institutions.

Formal requirements


a) Hold a Master's degree in Philosophy or a related field;
b) Or hold a first degree in Philosophy or in another area, provided that they demonstrate a curriculum recognised by the Scientific Council that qualifies them to undertake a Doctorate in Philosophy;
c) Or hold a foreign higher academic degree deemed appropriate provided that they can demonstrate a curriculum recognised by the Scientific Board that qualifies them to undertake a Doctorate in Philosophy;
Cumulatively with a) and/or b) or c):
(i) Carry out a research project, including an indication of the sources to be used and the timeframe, with a favourable opinion from a lecturer of the cycle of studies who may be appointed, by the CC of ELACH, as a supervisor;
(ii) Present a curriculum vitae that proves sufficient maturity for the completion of the Doctorate in Philosophy;
(iii) If needed, to hold an interview to clarify any aspects that the course directorate considers relevant in relation to questions (i) and (ii).
