MASTER DEGREE IN LITERATURES OF PORTUGUESE LANGUAGE

Description

The Master's Degree in Literatures in Portuguese follows on from the Degree in Portuguese Studies, which is part of the School of Arts and Human Sciences’(ELACH) current undergraduate curriculum. This second cycle of studies aims to promote the autonomy of the students’ work, developing their skills in articulating knowledge, research and communication of that research, within the framework of a humanistic training that is intended to be aligned with the mission of ELACH whose Statutes emphasize the purpose of “strengthening, in an increasingly intense, inclusive and consolidated way, both culture and humanistic training, critical thinking and the arts, as well as the appreciation of the Portuguese language and multilingualism as a fundamental condition for the deepening of mutual understanding in a world increasingly globalized.”
Given the particular relevance of postgraduate programs in the current context of higher education, understood more and more as a natural sequence of graduation, this Master's Degree program allows for the provision of specialized training in the field of literary theory and criticism and of the several Portuguese Language Literatures (Portuguese, Brazilian and African).
The highly qualified teaching staff of the Master's program are mainly located in one of the school's research center (CEHUM), which facilitates and promotes the desirable articulation between teaching/research as well as the insertion of the course's students in the research environment.
This course offers a complement of scientific training to graduates in various fields of Human Sciences and intends to propose an integrated perspective of literary studies and the study of Literatures in Portuguese, focusing on an intermedial and transdisciplinary universe that is especially adjustable to contemporary epistemological paradigms. It is also intended, in particular, to foster pedagogical repercussions in the teaching of these Literatures at various levels of education, through theoretical deepening and practices of critical and comparative reading, articulating literary objects with other artistic and cultural objects.
