MASTER DEGREE IN PORTUGUESE-GERMAN STUDIES

Double Degree Master, jointly offered by the University of Minho and the Johann Wolfgang Goethe-Universität Frankfurt/Main

This course constitutes a unique offer in the European Higher Education Area: a bilingual postgraduate training in the area of Portuguese-German Studies. The two-year double degree Master's Course jointly offered by Universidade do Minho (UMinho) and Goethe-Universität Frankfurt/Main (UFrankfurt) is aimed at graduate candidates not only from Portugal, Germany, Austria and Switzerland, but also from other European and non-European countries, namely Brazil and the Portuguese-Speaking Countries (PALOP), who, in the context of EU programmes for the development of exchanges within the European Union and with other geographical areas, are interested in obtaining a solid education in the field of Luso-German relations.
 
In the current political, economic and cultural context, this course responds to the need to train professionals with high bilingual and intercultural competence, specialised in the areas of Contrastive Linguistics, Sciences of Culture, and Comparative Literature, capable of acting in Lusophone and German-speaking countries.

Students who complete the programme with a total of 120 ECTS will obtain a Double Degree with a single certificate signed by both partner institutions.
For UMinho students, the attribution of Erasmus+ scholarships is foreseen. The application for scholarship is made when enrolling in the course.

Description


This bilingual postgraduate training in the area of ??Luso-German Studies is a course in association between the University of Minho and the Goethe-Universität of Frankfurt/Main that awards degrees by both universities. The course provides up-to-date scientific and professional training in the area of ??Portuguese-German comparative studies, with a focus on linguistic, cultural and literary aspects, as well as on translation and documentation studies. It trains specialists in Portuguese-German intercultural and linguistic relations, capable of acting in contexts of educational, research and cultural intervention institutions and in companies, with an improved practice, both in German and Portuguese, and with advanced training centered on relations between Portuguese-speaking and German-speaking countries.

Key learning outcomes


1. Provide in-depth scientific training in the areas of contrastive linguistics and comparative Portuguese-German cultural and literary studies;
2. Deepen high communicative skills in German and Portuguese (learning according to the students' mother tongue), up to CEFR level C1;
3. Develop a mediating ethics, which allows the student to deal with complex issues, develop solutions or make judgments in situations that imply a specific knowledge of German-Portuguese relations and a capacity for bilingual and intercultural negotiation;
4. Train professionals who know how to respond to different requests from institutions and companies that require a deep Luso-German bilingual and intercultural practice;
5. Develop specialized skills of textual and cultural analysis in the context of Portuguese-German translation.
6. Provide knowledge that allows the creative application of digital editing tools in institutional, business and social communication, marketing, tourism, translation and/or content and program management;
7. Develop specialized skills in the areas of Portuguese and German linguistics or Portuguese-German cultural and literary studies, according to specialization in the 3rd and 4th semesters of the course, which allow entry into more advanced postgraduate study cycles, namely doctoral studies .
8. Promote contact with different forms of research in an international academic context.

Access to higher education


This course confers the technical-scientific capacity for access to postgraduate courses (namely a PhD) in the areas of Language Sciences, Cultural Sciences or Literature Sciences, according to the scientific area of ??the UC Dissertation.

Careers


Graduates of this course are trained to work in institutions and companies that require a deep Luso-German bilingual and intercultural practice, namely binational and multinational companies and institutions operating between Lusophone and German-speaking countries, teaching and training institutions in languages, translation and management services for Portuguese-German content and programmes.

Formal requirements


1) Holders of a bachelor's degree or legal equivalent in the areas of the humanities or social sciences;
2) Holders of a foreign higher academic degree organized according to the principles of the Bologna Process by a State adhering to this Process, in the areas of the humanities or social sciences;
3) Holders of a foreign higher academic degree that is recognized by the competent scientific body of UMinho / UFrankfurt;
4) Holders of a school, scientific or professional curriculum that is recognized as attesting the capacity to carry out these graduate studies, by the competent scientific body of UMinho / UFrankfurt;
5) Candidates must prove language proficiency in German and Portuguese with a minimum level B1 (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages / CEFR), if they are not native speakers of one (or both) of these languages.
