MASTER DEGREE IN PORTUGUESE AS FOREIGN OR SECOND LANGUAGE

The MA in Portuguese as Foreign or Second Language aims at providing theoretical basis and practical tools for intervention in the area, contributing to an update and deepening the knowledge of Portuguese language and of Portuguese and Portuguese-speaking literatures and cultures, as well as its applicability in various contexts. It aims to respond to current changes resulting from migratory movements which have greatly contributed to the sociocultural heterogeneity and linguistic diversity that characterize the reality of the country today. It also aims to train agents capable of implementing a policy of dissemination and consolidation of the Portuguese language and culture in the dynamics of Portugal's strategic relations with partners in the European Union (EU) and other countries of the Portuguese diaspora.

Application stages: 

1st stage – 11 to 22 April 2024 - International and National students.
2nd stage – 04 to 15 July 2024 - International and National students
3rd stage – 03 to 06 September 2024 - International and National students

International undergraduate students that are enrolled in the final year of their cycle of studies and have not completed all the disciplines required to obtain a degree may, exceptionally, apply to a master's degree, starting in the 1st semester of the 2024/25 academic year.
Candidates who are admitted under these conditions must send the document that proves that they have completed their undergraduate degree before the 15th July to the Pedagogical Council of the School of Arts and Humanities by e-mail pedagogico@elach.uminho.pt or they will be excluded from the selection process.

Description


The Master's Course in PNNL aims to provide students with theoretical bases and practical instruments of intervention in the area of Portuguese as a foreign language / second language / heritage language / host language, contributing to an update and a deepening of knowledge related to the Portuguese language and literatures and cultures Portuguese language, as well as its applicability in different contexts. It also intends to train agents capable of conceiving and implementing policies for the dissemination and consolidation of the Portuguese language and the culture (s) that are expressed in it, in the dynamics of Portugal's strategic relations with CPLP partners and with the countries where it operates. find communities of speakers or potential speakers of the language. The training given within the course integrates components from the scientific areas of applied linguistics, literature, culture and language teaching. In addition to these mandatory components, optional UCs related to technologies applied to languages, to statistical methods applied to human sciences and to research methodologies, which aim to reinforce students' skills according to the profile that best suits them: trainer in languages; creator of contents and teaching materials; advisor for the definition and implementation of language policies. The possibility of conducting an internship and respective report, as an alternative to the final dissertation, reinforces the professionalizing component to be added to the research component.

Key learning outcomes


1. Develop students' knowledge in the areas of applied Portuguese linguistics, Portuguese language literatures and cultures and language teaching;
2. Promote reflection on the nature of knowledge based on language-culture (s) and its applicability in multilingual and multicultural environments related to the learning and contexts of the use of the Portuguese language.
3. Stimulate the ability to apply knowledge acquired in internships and / or research projects related to PFL / P2L, in creative and original ways.
4. Improve students' sense of ethical and social responsibility, making them aware that knowledge and mastery of the language are powerful mechanisms of social integration or exclusion.
5. Improve students' competence to communicate acquired knowledge and results of theoretical research or practical activity, related to the areas of study, both to specialist and non-specialized audiences.
6. Stimulate students' capacity for continuous self-training, in a lifelong learning dynamic.

Access to higher education


This master's course provides basic training and technical and scientific skills for attending 3rd cycle courses in the areas of Language Sciences, Literature Sciences, Cultural Sciences and Language Didactics.

Careers


Given the profile of the course and its curriculum structure, there are three main potential areas of employability:
- Trainer in Portuguese for speakers of other languages, both with the status of a foreign language (FL), a second language (2L), an heritage language (HL) ou an host language (HoL)
- Creator and producer of contents and teaching materials, in the most varied supports, for training in PFL, P2L, PHL and PHoL.
- Advisor and coordinator in public or private institutions responsible for the elaboration and application of language policies and for the reception and integration of foreign citizens.

Formal requirements


1. Holders of a Bachelor's degree in Arts and Humanities or related areas, or legal equivalent;
2. Holders of a foreign higher academic degree in Arts and Humanities or related areas following a first cycle of studies organised according to the principles of the Bologna Process;
3. Holders of a foreign higher academic degree in Arts and Humanities or related areas, recognized by the statutorily competent scientific body of UMinho as satisfying the requirements for the degree of licenciado;
4. Holders of an academic, scientific or professional curriculum vitae that is recognized by the statutorily competent scientific body of the UMinho as attesting the capacity to carry out this cycle of studies.
5. In any of the cases referred in items 1 to 4, when the 1st cycle degree is not in a scientific area with a Portuguese language component or when the candidates do not have Portuguese as their mother tongue, they must present a document proving their language competences in Portuguese.
