Description

The undergraduate course European Languages and Literatures, with bilingual branches, provides solid training in the Arts, in two study areas - Language I (Major Portuguese/English) and Language II (Minor English/German/French/Spanish), in the subareas: (i) Language and Linguistics; (ii) Literature and Culture.
The Monolingual branch provides a solid training in English Studies: English, N. American and Irish Language, Linguistics, Literature and Culture.
The Course in general aims to develop the skills of collecting, selecting, interpreting and communicating relevant information, particularly in the Humanities area.
The options provide competencies that facilitate integration in the workplace, multicultural cooperation and ICT competencies.
The solid training in the Humanities, coupled with a professionalizing component, qualifies students in the culture, media, editorial supervision areas, as well as the culture and content creation, translating and preservation of patrimony industries.
Articulated with 2nd cycle courses, it qualifies students for teaching in primary and secondary schools.

Key learning outcomes

The student attending this degree (in the Bologna model) will obtain a solid and versatile training in the Humanities, through a strong theoretical component in the areas of language, linguistics, literature and culture - Portuguese, English, German, Spanish, French, Italian and Russian (options), allowing him/her to develop a series of fundamental skills for an increasingly globalized and multicultural job market.
This theoretical training is combined with a more practical and professionalizing component, with a view to the development of professionals with relevant technical skills today, as is the case with information technologies.

Access to higher education

The course provides a multidisciplinary basis, allowing students to embark on more traditional professional pathways, through Masters in Teaching or Translation, and new pathways linked to the Digital Humanities - 2nd cycle courses related to the creation of digital content in the areas of the Humanities.

Careers

This degree provides qualifications for the exercise of professional activity in the fields of the media, in the context of multilingualism and multiculturalism, cultural advice within the central and local administrations, editorial supervision, the cultural or content industry, and translation.
In conjunction with 2nd cycle courses (masters), the degree qualifies students for teaching in the area of languages (Portuguese, English, Spanish, German, French) in Basic and Secondary education.
For students who want to pursue advanced studies in the Humanities, either at the master's or doctoral levels, the training acquired in the course constitutes an added value to support the research developed in Centres.
