Description

The Bachelor's Degree in Oriental Studies - Chinese and Japanese Studies (EO-ECJ) at the University of Minho aims to provide students with linguistic competence, communication skills, and cultural sensitivity that enable them to act in all areas and professional activities related to the Chinese and Japanese worlds, establishing bridges with these societies.
The students' training will have as the core of their learning the reference languages, Chinese and Japanese, as working and acquisition languages, which will result in a strong emphasis on working time in these areas in the curriculum. In this sense, considering that linguistic competence alone is considered insufficient, students should also be provided with a series of knowledge and sensitivities to enrich them with an appropriate contextualized communicational capacity, which justifies the existence of curricular units related to the geographies, histories, cultures, philosophies, among others, of both countries. Due not only to the distance between the languages and cultures in question and our own, but also to the specific nature of this course, the conveyed knowledge should always be further deepened in the 2nd cycle. Therefore, the students' greatest interest has been focused on the possibility of spending a year of study in China (in the 2nd cycle) or Japan (in the 1st cycle).
Furthermore, this bachelor's degree is composed of a qualified, young, and diligent faculty whose research areas are mainly focused on the intercultural dialogue that must be established between Portugal and China/Japan. The teaching and learning methodologies will stimulate independent and cooperative work by the students, also allowing them direct contact with teachers from the mentioned countries and their respective working methods. Throughout the academic year, some conferences and colloquia will be held, with special emphasis on the Asian Studies Days.
