BACHELOR DEGREE IN PHILOSOPHY

​​This course enables students to deepen their understanding of the main themes and problems of Philosophy. The Bachelor Degree in Philosophy at the University of Minho is particularly recommended for those seeking a solid cultural training and the development of critical thinking and argumentation skills. Prospective candidates include not only those now concluding their secondary education, but also those having already some professional experience and looking for a supplementary qualification in a labour market in which, more than specialisation, the capacity for adaptation and flexibility are valued.
Face-to-face teaching will take place, mainly, between 5 and 8 p.m.

Description


The Bachelor in Philosophy at the University of Minho is an undergraduate course suited to the Bologna process, with a duration of three years. Its main objectives are to facilitate the acquisition of basic and in-depth knowledge in the different areas of philosophy and its history, as well as familiarization with the research methodology specific to those areas. The teaching, learning and assessment methodologies applied aim to make students' contact with the main works, theories, problems and philosophical arguments contribute to developing their ability to argue and critically reflect. In addition, without prejudice to the historical framework of the themes, it seeks to assess current problems and issues and highlight the most recent contributions and philosophical domains.
To this extent, this degree allows the acquisition of a solid cultural formation and the development of critical thinking and expression skills. It is an attractive degree for those who are now finishing their secondary studies, but it also suits the profile of candidates with professional experience who are looking for an additional qualification in a job market where, more than specialization, adaptability and flexibility count. . On the other hand, this degree, due to the intellectual tools and skills it develops, is also suitable for those who wish to pursue postgraduate studies, not only in philosophy but also in areas such as the humanities and the social and human sciences.
This course has a faculty composed of experts recognized in the national and international university system. In addition to normal academic activities, students can diversify, update and deepen their knowledge by attending numerous seminars, congresses, community of readers, days, which take place throughout the school year and are organized by professors and/or students.

Key learning outcomes


Graduates of the degree in Philosophy must have achieved the following learning objectives:
1. Demonstrated basic and in-depth knowledge of the main theories, problems and currents, within the scope of different areas of philosophy and their history;
2. Were able to use relevant concepts, theories and analytical approaches in the field of philosophy to formulate arguments that support their own positions on issues discussed within their scope;
3. Acquired the ability to critically interpret and analyze the most relevant works of past and present philosophy;
4. Acquired the capacity and competences that allow them to compare and critically evaluate different perspectives on fundamental problems of philosophy;
5. Acquired communication skills to effectively expose, orally and in writing, philosophical concepts, theories and arguments;
6. Acquired skills in the field of logic, argumentation, and critical thinking in general, which allow them to rigorously evaluate opinions, arguments and philosophical theories;
7. Were able to produce a short written essay (paper) on a subject of philosophy, in accordance with the methodological conventions of academic scientific research;
8. Acquired training, knowledge and basic research skills that allow them to pursue postgraduate studies, especially in Philosophy.

This course confers the technical-scientific capacity to access courses in the next cycle, either Master's or Doctoral.
