Description

The Degree in Portuguese Studies is part of a plan already established for the provision of teaching at ELACH and it meets the objectives defined in the Specific Development Program of the University of Minho to improve higher education supply in Portugal.
The goals set by the Degree in Portuguese Studies are consistent with the educational, scientific and cultural project of the University of Minho, as they aim to strengthen relevant areas in national and international higher education institutions. They further allow for a more profitable use of the human resources as well as the scientific potential and experience of PhD teachers in this area.
It should also be added that a Portuguese Studies Course is essential for the defense and promotion of Portuguese and Lusophone cultures, tasks that are necessarily the responsibility of a Portuguese university.
Consisting essentially of disciplinary areas linked to the Humanities and Classical Studies, it contains humanistic aspects that are absolutely necessary for the constitution of a university in the most global and full sense of the term, that is, a university that is not limited to a set of only technical and scientific knowledge, but also encompassing the whole essence of what makes us human.
The main objective of the Degree in Portuguese Studies is to provide general and interdisciplinary training through the study of the Portuguese language, in its European and non-European varieties, and the study of Portuguese, Brazilian and African cultures and literatures in the Portuguese language.
The study cycle aims at solid qualification in the areas of literary studies and in the studies of cultures, linguistic studies and classical studies.
Having as the preferred horizon of employability the areas of culture and teaching, the Degree in Portuguese Studies proposes literacy models that are not limited to the natural language and printed material, enabling its graduates to teach and act appropriately in contexts permeated by the new media and the new behaviours and culture languages.
