MASTER DEGREE IN DIGITAL HUMANITIES

​The Master in Digital Humanities of the School of Arts and Humanities of UMinho is the first of its kind in Portugal and had its first edition in 2018/2019.
​The Master's programme involves the collaboration of the Schools of Engineering, Sciences and Law of UMinho, denoting its strong interdisciplinary nature.

Application stages: 

1st stage – 11 to 21 April 2025 - International and National students.

Key learning outcomes


1. Stimulate reflection on how digital methods can be applied to improve research in Social Sciences and Humanities;  
2. Develop core competencies in the research fields of Digital Humanities;  
3. Stimulate and encourage the search for new interpretative models that will contribute to our understanding of cultural, linguistic, literary and social phenomena;  
4. Promote dialogue between the Humanities, Computation and Information Technologies and the Exact Sciences;  
5. Introduce fundamental principles of authorial and intellectual property rights;  
6. Encourage the creation of innovative and experimental projects in the fields of the study programme.

Access to higher education


This course confers the technical-scientific capacity for access to 3rd cycle courses (PhD).

Careers


There are a wide range of career opportunities for Digital Humanities graduates:
- Information Science institutions, such as libraries, archives, museums, documentation centres, where Digital Humanities graduates may work with the digital preservation of textual heritage, create digital editions, collections, archives and do information and document management;
- Institutions related to data management and analysis in the context of emerging digital environments and new online platforms/infrastructures;
- Institutions dedicated to the development of applications using vocabularies and open-source technologies;
- Institutions dedicated to the development of digital communication solutions and web applications where Digital Humanities graduates are capable of assuming the role of digital project manager. 
Apart from these career opportunities directly related to the scientific training and background provided by the Masters in Digital Humanities, the skills and competences acquired may be channelled towards the development of new businesses in the cultural and creative industries sector.

Formal requirements


The candidates must meet one of the following conditions:
a) Holders of a licenciatura/bachelor’s degree in Social and Human Sciences or legal equivalent;
b) Holders of a licenciatura/bachelor’s degree in Informatics or Computer Science or legal
equivalent;
c) Holders of a higher education academic degree corresponding to the conclusion of a 1st cycle degree programme in the fields of the study cycle, conferred in the European Union and organized in accordance with the Bologna Process;
d) Holders of a foreign higher education academic degree in the fields of the cycle study that is
recognized by the Scientific Council of the School of Letters, Arts and Human Sciences;
e) Holders of an academic, scientific or professional curriculum recognised by the Scientific Council of the the School of Letters, Arts and Human Sciences, as attesting to their ability to complete this cycle of studies.
