The European Master in Lexicography (EMLex) is an Erasmus Mundus Joint Master (EMJM) is a prestigious international master’s programme, jointly designed and delivered in the period from 2024/2025 to 2028/2029 by a Consortium composed of eight Higher Education Institutions (HEIs):

    • University of Santiago de Compostela - coordinating university (Spain) | consult the EMLex Consortium website;
    • University of Minho (Portugal);
    • University Friedrich-Alexander Erlangen-Nürnberg (Germany);
    • University of Lorraine (Nancy, France); 
    • Ilia State University (Geórgia);
    • Károli Gáspár University of the Reformed Church (Budapest, Hungary);
    • Roma Tre University (Italy);
    • University of Hildesheim (Germany).

The Degree Programme is also supported by eight associated partner institutions and many academics from around the world: University of Stellenbosch; Leibniz Institute for the German Language; University of Surrey; Akademische der Wissenschaften zu Göttingen; Université Felix Houphouet Boigny; Universität Innsbruck; Pontificia Universidad Católica de Valparaíso; The University of Texas System:

The EMJM-EMLex is targeted at students who show an avid interest in working with dictionaries and online lexicographic resources. The master's programme focuses on building expertise in theoretical and practical Lexicography, Digital Humanities, Language Technologies, Natural Language Processing and Artificial Intelligence directed towards the needs of a changing digital and global society. The distinguishing features of the EMJM-EMLex are its international orientation, the interaction between theory and practice, the promotion of multilingualism (languages of instruction are German and English and the acquisition of other European languages), innovative approaches to teaching and learning, as well as a comprehensive mobility plan and a close link to private and social sectors.

Programme structure:

    • The degree programme has a duration of 4 semesters (120 ECTS).
    • The 1st semester focuses on the fundamentals of Lexicography, languages and the acquisition of transversal competences. The curricular unit (CU) Basics of Lexicography (10 ECTS) is an e-learning course, designed in bilingual format (English and German), comprising several learning modules, each taught by a lecturer from the partner universities, in which basic knowledge of Lexicography, Linguistics and Digital Humanities is imparted. This CU aims to provide all students with the same knowledge required to attend the advanced courses in the 2nd semester. The four optional curricular units (5 ECTS each) offer a wide range of courses in the fields of Linguistics, Translation, Terminology, Foreign Language Acquisition, Computer Science and Digital Humanities. It is also possible for students to improve their proficiency in English and/or German.
    • The 2nd semester is a compulsory mobility semester at one of the HEIs.
      Of the 10 curricular units* offered throughout the semester, students must attend a minimum of 6 units (30 ECTS) for assessment purposes.
      *Metalexicography; History of Lexicography; Modeling and Representing Data in Digital Lexicography; Research Into Dictionary Use; Special Field Lexicography and Terminology; Computational Lexicography; Dictionaries and Translation; Lexicography and Lexicology; Dictionary Planning; Learner Dictionaries.
    • The 3rd semester is dedicated to advanced modules and the internship which is carried out in close collaboration with institutions in the public and private sector.
    • The 4th semester is dedicated to the master's thesis.
Admission requirements:

    • A bachelor's degree in study fields such as Humanities, Language Technologies, Computational Linguistics.
    • Language requirements in English and German:
      1. Proficiency in German must be equivalent to proficiency level B1 or B2 on the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR);
      2. Proficiency in English must be equivalent to B1 or B2 (CEFR). Evidence of the required proficiency must be provided in the form of language certificates.

The European Master in Lexicography (EMLEX) - Erasmus Mundus Joint Master Degree (EMLMD - EMLEX) since 2015 until 2024 is organised jointly by the Higher Education Institutions Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg, University of Minho, Université de Lorraine/Nancy, Universidade de Santiago de Compostela, University of Silesia (Katowice), Stellenbosch University, Università degli Studi Roma Tre, Károli Gáspár Református Egyetem (Budapest).
The majority of lecturers of the study cycle are teachers from the partner universities that compose the Consortium (Full Members - universities mentioned above) and teachers from universities and institutions that are Associated Partners of the Consortium. This means that these lecturers do not have a contractual link with the UMinho.
This Master’s Degree Programme is designed for all those interested in acquiring theoretical and practical expertise in the Field of Lexicography and who have a special interest in linguistics, translation, terminology, language teaching, digital preservation of lexicographic heritage, development of print and electronic/digital lexicographic resources, natural language processing and the development of linguistic solutions in digital communication.

Key learning outcomes


1. To promote international and interdisciplinary training of lexicographers (unique teaching programme in Europe in its current structure); 
2. To allow for the development of skills in theoretical and practical lexicography on international level; 
3. To encourage the acquisition of cultural and language competencies of the language(s) and culture(s) of the countries of the Consortium universities; 
4. To promote the contact with different research methodologies in different international academic contexts;
5. To support the integration of students in real work settings.

Access to higher education


The European Master in Lexicography study programme provides fundamental technical and scientific skills for access to a 3rd cycle study programme in the same scientific domain or related domains.

Careers


The holders of a Master’s Degree in Lexicography will be prepared to work:
(i) either as lexicographers at a publishing company or as academic lexicographers in all fields of lexicography, ranging from the conception of print and online dictionaries to specific lexicographic tasks through to the technical development of lexicographical resources;
(ii) in the fields of terminology, translation, the IT sector and Natural Language Processing projects;
(iii) apply lexicographic and terminological concepts to language learning.

Formal requirements


Admitted for enrollment in the course are:
1) Holders of a degree in Human and Social Sciences and Informatics, or legal equivalent;
2) Holders of a foreign academic degree in Human and Social Sciences and Informatics conferred after completing a first cycle of studies organized according to the principles of the Bologna Process by a State acceding to this process;
3) Holders of a foreign academic degree in Human and Social Sciences and Informatics recognized as meeting the objectives of a degree by the competent scientific body of the University of Minho;
4) Holders of an academic, scientific or professional curriculum which is recognized as attesting the capacity to carry out this cycle of studies by a competent scientific body of the University of Minho.
