MASTER DEGREE IN SCIENCES OF LANGUAGE

The course is aimed at complementing the graduates’ training in Languages or Portuguese Studies by providing solid fundaments in General Linguistics and Portuguese Linguistics. The course is intended both for those interested in working on the Portuguese language and its variants and for those who choose to work on other languages from a comparative perspective. Given its curricular structure, it is particularly suited for Primary and Secondary School teachers who are looking for an upgrade in the areas of Linguistic Terminology for Primary and Secondary Schools (TLEBS). The Course offers the opportunity of integration in Language Sciences research projects at CEHUM (Humanities Research Centre) and is organised in articulation with the pertinent research areas of the PhD in Language Sciences. It thus constitutes a privileged means of accessing a PhD and a research career in the area.

By promoting the development of competences and the deepening of knowledge in the area of general and Portuguese linguistics, the course aims at training Master students capable of intervening in areas of activity such as:
  • teaching of Portuguese as mother tongue or as second or foreign language;
  • translation;
  • content development for translation or language teaching;
  • editorial supervision;
  • detection and remediation of language disorders;

Description

The Master's Degree in Language Sciences aims to provide a solid education in the core areas of General Linguistics and their applications, thus ensuring the development of scientific and technical competencies necessary both for the production of original research on the Portuguese language and/or different languages, and for the performance of professional activities that require specialized knowledge on the processes underlying the structuring and use of languages.

Key learning outcomes

The Master's Degree in Language Sciences is awarded to those who demonstrate:
1. Knowledge and understanding of the terminology and analysis tools necessary for an adequate description of specific linguistic phenomena of the different components of a natural language, with particular emphasis on the Portuguese language, at a level that:
(i) develops and deepens the knowledge at the 1st cycle level;
(ii) forms the basis for original development and/or applications, particularly in a research context;
2. The ability to critically reflect on different theoretical proposals for approaching a given linguistic aspect;
3. The ability to carry out a program of work leading to the writing of a dissertation or project in a given domain of language sciences;
4. The ability to apply the knowledge and skills acquired in broad contexts, such as in the performance of professional activities in areas related to language sciences;
5. The ability to communicate their conclusions - and the knowledge and reasoning underlying them - to both specialists and non-specialists in a clear and unambiguous way;
6. The development of competencies that enable them to engage in lifelong learning in a fundamentally self-directed and autonomous manner.

Access to higher education

This cycle of studies provides access to a Ph.D. in Language Sciences.
